What is Sprau about?
At the heart of our journey lies a simple yet powerful idea: awakening the bean. This is the essence of Sprau®, a brand born from the rich legacy and innovation of Viking Malt. Sprau® was launched as an entrepreneurial innovation platform within Viking Malt, a company founded in 1883 in Lahti, Finland. Viking Malt is now one of the leading maltsters in Europe, with operations across Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, and Lithuania. With over 260 professionals, Viking Malt continues to explore more through malt — and now pulses.

2020
Seeding launch of Sprau® products, including germinated faba bean flour and split bean
2021
Commercial launch of Sprau® in Food Ingredients Europe, where Sprau® was selected as one of the finalists of the Fi Europe 2021 Innovation Awards, in Plant-based Innovation Award category
2023
New products, Sprau® protein and starch-rich flour, were introduced in Food ingredients Europe and attended to Fi Europe 2023 Innovation Awards
Viking Malt’s new production site started operations in Lahti, Finland and Sprau® production was moved there
Sprau® was introduced to breweries in BrauBeviale as an innovative new ingredient for beers and other beverages
The first beer with Sprau® was launched by a craft brewery in Finland
2024 – 2025
More food applications were developed based on Sprau®, with focus on dairy and meat alternatives
